JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Homeless Shelter Shift Monitor is responsible for providing emergency shelter, with a minimum of barriers, for those in need by overseeing activities and general operation of the shelter. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the completion of intakes, monitoring of client activities, maintaining safety and security, referral services, and light housekeeping. Successful candidates must have the ability to cover various shifts, including weekends and holidays, as the shelter operates 24/7.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Provide superb customer service contributing to a warm and caring environment that encourages cooperation, respect, and a feeling of community
• Provide all guests, staff, and volunteers with a safe and secure environment. This includes monitoring guest activities as well as regular walkthroughs of the shelter sleeping areas, common areas, and bathrooms
• Enforce shelter policies and ensure that guests, staff, and volunteers follow all shelter policies and procedures
• Verify clients’ homelessness, receive new residents, complete intake paperwork, and create client files
• Admit and discharge guests following all shelter rules: this includes, but is not limited to, the enforcement of what personal items can and cannot come with guests into the shelter, issuing of bedding to each guest upon arrival, and distribution of personal necessities to guests as needed and as supplies are available
• Follow crisis de-escalation protocol by diffusing any conflicts as they arise and communicating with supervisors, other staff, and security as needed
• Support meal set up, distribution, and coordination
• Provide consistent coverage for assigned shifts, working within the team and independently to complete all shift tasks
• Assist in the coordination of scheduling coverage of volunteers and shift staff at the shelter to ensure smooth operation of the program
• Support volunteers and other staff members by orienting them to safety guidelines and shelter procedures
• In the event of inclement weather, the monitor will follow the weather policy
• May be asked to complete data collection and entry into Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) database
• Complete shift reports detailing pertinent information of all activities and events during the assigned shift. Review previous shift reports to ensure a continuity of supervision throughout the shifts
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all guest information
• Provide appropriate referral resources and information to shelter guests as needed
• Complete incident reports for resident crisis issues, rule violations, etc.
• Complete maintenance request forms as needed for any facility/maintenance repairs
• Enforce COVID-19 protocols
• Attend staff meetings as requested
• Light housekeeping duties: including but not limited to; sanitizing and disinfecting common areas, laundering of excess blankets, towels, and bedding as needed, sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, trash removal, etc.
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• Team player committed to the common purpose of assisting those in need
• Personable, positive, and able to work well with diverse populations
• Demonstrates an understanding of a variety of human behaviors and is able to diffuse hostile situations
• Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining order and remaining calm under pressure
• Ability to operate telephones and basic electronic and office equipment
• High school diploma or equivalent 12-year degree preferred
• Ability to become Adult CPR/First Aid/AED certified

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, and kneel on an intermittent or continual basis
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 35 pounds
